Are solar panels worth it?

With the rise in energy prices recently, I have been wondering whether we could save money by installing solar panels on our roofs. The appeal of being able to save money on our energy bills is very attractive right now. But are solar panels worth it?

What are solar panels?

Solar panels capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity that you can use in your home, enabling you to generate your own renewable electricity. The panels are made from cells that themselves are made from many layers of material (often silicon) and a flow of electricity is created when light shines on the material. These panels are usually installed on your roof, and you need around 25m² of roof area for a typical system. Even on a cloudy day, it is possible to generate electricity, although more electricity is generated on a sunny day.

What are the positives?

There’s no doubt that the biggest gain from solar panels is the money that you can save through the electricity you generate. This could save a typical household £100’s on their yearly bills. This could be even more of a money saver if you have an electric car, as you would be saving on charging your car as well.  Many systems come with battery storage, enabling you to store the energy you have generated, and the opportunity to sell any electricity you don’t use or store. Solar panels are environmentally friendly as they are a clean renewable source of energy.

What are the negatives?

There is a lot to consider with solar panels though. For example, it can take over 10-15 years to recoup the costs of installation, depending on how much electricity you use and what you are paid for the excess energy that you generate. Different types of solar panels are available, and it is best to look into this further before making any decisions. Don’t just go with the one that an installation company offers you! Make sure you are getting a good deal and that the panels that you install will generate the maximum potential electricity for you.

Another big drawback of solar panels is the initial outlay in purchasing the panels and having them installed. This can cost around £6,500.  If you’ve got the savings to invest in solar panels, then it could be a great little money-saver for you, but perhaps not if you haven’t got the cash upfront now.

You also need to consider the type of roof that you have - not only do you need plenty of space and your roof needs to be in a good condition, but also it needs to be predominantly south-facing and largely unshaded. So solar panels won’t work for everyone, even if you are keen, if you live in a shady area with a north-facing roof then they just aren’t for you!

Do solar panels deliver on their promises?

There are ways to get the most out of your solar panels. For example, if you are using more power than your panels are generating then reducing your electricity use can help lower your bills or you will be supplementing your supply with electricity from the grid. It is best to run your electrical appliances (such as your washing machine and dishwasher) during the day when you are generating the most electricity.

Overall, I would say that solar panels are worth the investment if you have a property that has an adequate roof and if you have a lump sum to invest in the installation of the panels in the first place. There is no doubt that solar panels can offer a way to reduce your bills if you are able to put together the initial outlay of cash.

But, if you do not have a large sum to invest initially, then solar panels will probably not be for you.
