Escape to the Summer House | Electrical Installation of a Summer House

During Lockdown our gardens have become even more important. Everyone loves their home, but sometimes there feels a need to escape from the house. That’s when your garden comes into play. However, sometimes the patio might feel too exposed, or you might just be wanting to shelter from the elements whilst getting a breath of fresh air. Having a summer house to escape to could be the answer. That’s exactly what this client was after a relaxing place to retreat to where they could read, relax and listen to music. However, for various reasons, this installation required quite a bit of problem-solving.  There were four main problems that needed thought and three solutions that were identified.
1. A wooden structure
The electrical installation of a summer house needs to be approached with a lot of thought because, as the building fabric is wood, movement between the elements of the structure is possible. Wires that were tightly fixed to the structure may be damaged as the wood warps with time. This particular project was installed in conduit to allow for movement of the cables if necessary.

2. Limited space for sockets

The client wanted additional sockets for phones, speakers, and a fan. The customer did not want to sleep in the summer house in the depths of midwinter, but having the option of a heater to keep the chill off in the evening was a requirement.  All these appliances would need electrical points. Due to the limited space available, I suggested installing USB sockets. This allows for additional appliances to be run from the same socket point.

3. Poor lighting

The client wanted to be able to read at night. The structure also had an additional storage area. I installed lights so that finding things would not be an issue. External lighting was also a requirement so that approaching the summer house at night was easy. This way the path and door would be well lit to enable ease of access.
