The Brief
The client contacted me to help him complete the electrical installation in his garage to home gym conversion project. Following the consultation period, it was clear that there were three main requirements that had to be taken into account when planning this conversion.
1. Adequate lighting
As there is only one window in the new home gym, the customer wanted it to be well lit. Before the area was lit with batten lighting, so I suggested they change to spotlights to modernise the area and provide adequate lighting throughout the structure.
The client wanted the outside area to be lit up when approaching their new home gym. They already had PIR outside lights installed on the outside of their garage, so I was able to reuse them by connecting them up to the new electrical installation.
2. Flexibility
The client wanted to be able to move equipment around as and when required, so needed a lot of flexibility in the placement of his power points. Four sockets were installed to give options for the various equipment to be in place, and the sockets were fitted in a lower position so the power cords from the new equipment would reach the socket outlets easily.
Also, the client advised me that further down the line, they were thinking they may put false walls up in the gym to partition areas, so I advised them if they have lights on separate switches it could give the effect of having different zones in the gym.
The sockets were also installed into the walls rather than in trunking. This again helped transform the building from a garage to a room and created the feel of modern living space.
3. Separate isolators
In a home, you would have a consumer unit/fuse board, but as the old garage had one feed from the house consumer unit, the most cost-effective way to separate the circuits within the garage was to install isolators. So, two isolators were installed to separate the lighting and the sockets.
The customer was really delighted with the result. His review speaks for itself.
Highly recommended! The work was exceptional and [the] level [of] service absolutely fantastic.
